Overview

What this program is

Moonshot Labs is the trading name of Brent Owen McDorman, a sole proprietor. It operates privately owned servers that run self-hosted applications, scheduled backups, media services, and home automation. An internal notification service sends automated text messages about the health and status of those systems to the person who owns and administers them.

Typical messages report that a scheduled backup completed successfully, that a backup failed and needs attention, or that an automated service health check detected a problem. Every message is transactional and operational. None is promotional.

This program has exactly one recipient: Brent Owen McDorman, the owner and operator of Moonshot Labs. It is not offered to customers, subscribers, or any member of the public, and there is no way for a third party to be enrolled.

Consent

How consent is given

Because the sender and the recipient are the same person, consent is given directly rather than collected through a public sign-up flow. The complete enrolment process is:

The operator — who owns the servers, administers the notification service, and holds the messaging account — decides to receive operational alerts about his own systems.
He enters his own mobile number into the targets section of the notification service's configuration file, stored on a private server he controls.
He restarts the service. From that point the number is enrolled and begins receiving alerts.
Consent is withdrawn either by replying STOP to any message, or by removing the number from the configuration file.

Record of consent

The consent given, in the operator's own words, is recorded here:

"I consent to receive automated operational text alerts from my own Moonshot Labs infrastructure at the mobile number I have entered into the service configuration. I understand these are transactional service alerts, sent event-driven at roughly a few messages per week, that message and data rates may apply, that I can reply HELP for assistance, and that I can reply STOP at any time to cancel. I have read the Terms & Conditions and the Privacy Policy. Yes — enrol this number."

Enrolment confirmation. On enrolment the service sends a single confirmation message to the number:

Why there is no sign-up form

A web form, keyword opt-in, or paper consent document would serve no purpose here, because there is no second party to collect consent from. No phone number is ever obtained from a customer, a purchased list, a public directory, or any other external source. The only number in the system is the operator's own, entered by the operator himself.
